The Hamaca

This might be a little late and even though the resorts that we are visiting are starting to all look the same we couldn't let a trip to a resort just pass by without sharing it with everyone. It wasn't the most memorable trip that we have taken but it was still a nice little get away. We decided to take advantage of the Dominican holiday(a.k.a. a three day weekend) and head to Juan Dolio which is only about a half hour away. Another reason for our trip this time was that Kari's parents were flying in to spend time with her. They had flown in a day before and were waiting for us at the resort. We left as soon as we could after school on Friday hoping to get there around 3:30. However this is the Dominican and nothing ever runs the way it supposed to. On the way there we ran into a traffic jam that turned out to be a riot. After the police shot off some tear gas and the mob cleared the traffic began to flow. However, as the gas blew away the crowd return just as we were about to pass. We quickly sped by as we noticed fires in the streets and watched some cars get kicked on the way by. We never really knew what everyone was so upset about. What an adventure.

We finally made it to the resort, unloaded our things, and headed to the pool. After some floating around we got ready and decided to try the Mexican restaurant for the first night. It was nice to get to know Kari's parents while enjoying some good food that we didn't have to walk a mile to go get.
The next day we spent the day on the beach. This particular resort is located next to a bay so instead of playing in the waves the still water allowed from some excellent snorkeling. That first day Kari and I snorkeled around the bay and then headed out a few hundred yards to where the waves were breaking against the coral in hopes to find some other underwater creatures. The water was shallow and we were in luck as we saw all sorts of fish and other spinney sea creatures. The next day when I went back out with Claire I took along a Frisbee and was able to scoop one out of the water to take a closer look at it. Other than our little excursion the day was pretty uneventful, just the way we like it. In the later afternoon we would head to take a dip in the pool to get some of the salt water off before heading up to the room for a nice long hot shower and a nap. The last day we were there we decided to take advantage of some of the water sports the resort offered. I had my first go at windsurfing while we were there. It started off with Kari's dad giving it a try and then I went out to see if I could do it. Before long everyone had their chance. We were a little late for the instruction class that was offered so everything we did was an experiment. The lack of a good strong wind didn't help our cause any however, there was enough of a steady breeze to do the trick. After a few attempts I was able to go at it alone and travel down the beach a bit. The hard part for me was maneuvering it into the wind to get back to where I started. I am far from a professional, I would even go as far as to say I am far from good but it was fun to try something new and I would definitely be willing to give it another go the next time we head to the beach.

Like I mentioned earlier the resort was similar to others we have been to. We had Italian the second night, Dominican the third night, and the beach buffet for lunch and breakfast. We got nice tans and in my case a little burnt. The drinks were refreshing. The dance club at night was loud and hopin. And best of all the rooms were air conditioned.

The three days went by fast but we had a great time. It was a nice little get away before the crazy week that was to follow. After just a short two days at school we got ourselves ready to board a plane and head home for the weekend and a wedding. That story is yet to come.
